Nano Garden
At 120mm wide, this hole on Alte Jakobstraße has to be Berlin’s tiniest wild garden. Its modest depth has ensured two things: enough organic material has gathered here to produce a thin layer of humus soil; and the grass now growing within is protected from decapitation by passing cars.
I’m looking forward to mushrooms taking root, cracking the surrounding asphalt and providing shelter for oak or birch seedlings. Later, a bonsai forest might flourish capable of sustaining a nano-ecosystem complete with wild boar the size of match-stick heads ”¦
