State of Demolishment/Amusement
This year’s winter fair and Christmas market on Unter den Linden in Berlin is not only a lot larger than last year’s (it even spills out onto the street on one side, diverting traffic around an interesting chicane), but it also fits in beautifully with the gutted remnants of the old Palace of the Republic.
At night though, when the fair is lit with blinking neon, the semi-demolished Palace sadly disappears into the surrounding darkness. There should have been more integration of both structures: slides pouring out of the Palace’s abandoned top floor, a roller coaster weaving in and out of the voids where the windows used to be, and bumper-cars in the cellar …
